Opening a bank account is generally one of the first practical tasks new arrivals in Australia tackle, since so many other steps, from receiving a salary to signing a lease, depend on having a functioning local account. Most banks allow this process to begin before arrival or within a short window after landing, often with simplified identification requirements during that initial period.

Beyond the initial account itself, new arrivals typically need to think about a linked debit card, setting up online and mobile banking access, and understanding how everyday features such as direct debits and instant transfers work, since these can differ from banking habits formed elsewhere. Comparing account fees and any minimum balance conditions before committing is generally worthwhile.

Once a local tax file number is obtained, linking it to the account matters for tax purposes, and it is generally worth completing this step promptly rather than leaving it until tax time approaches. Many new arrivals also find it useful to keep some of their prior banking relationship active for a transition period while local arrangements settle in.
