What OCI Holders Should Know Before Taking Up Work in India

Overseas Citizen of India status generally allows the holder to live and work in India without needing a separate employment visa, which is one of its more practical everyday benefits compared with an ordinary foreign national's visa arrangements. This makes it considerably easier for diaspora professionals to take up roles, start ventures or work remotely for periods while based in India.

That said, certain categories of employment and professional activity have historically carried restrictions or required additional permissions for OCI holders, particularly roles connected to government service, defence adjacent work, or specific regulated professions. These carve outs exist precisely because OCI is not full citizenship, and some positions are reserved for citizens as a matter of policy.

Before committing to a role in India, an OCI holder is generally well served by checking whether the specific sector or employer has any citizenship linked requirement, since these rules can differ by industry and can change over time. Tax residency and social security implications of working in India also deserve separate consideration, since they follow their own distinct framework.
