Families returning to India after years in Australia often choose to maintain certain ties rather than closing every connection at the point of departure, whether that means retaining Australian citizenship, keeping a bank account active, or holding onto professional registrations that might otherwise lapse if left unattended for an extended period.

Maintaining Australian citizenship generally preserves the option of returning in future, and understanding any residency requirements tied to entitlements such as healthcare access is worth doing before departure, since some benefits depend on ongoing residence rather than citizenship status alone and can be affected by an extended period spent living overseas.

Deciding which ties are worth the ongoing effort to maintain, such as professional memberships, superannuation accounts or property, generally depends on how likely the family considers a future return to Australia, and on the administrative cost of keeping each tie active from a distance. Reviewing these decisions periodically tends to be more useful than settling them once and never revisiting them.
