How Australian institutions assess Indian secondary qualifications

When an Australian university or college assesses an Indian secondary qualification, it is typically comparing the structure, subject depth and final year outcomes against Australian senior secondary benchmarks. Board examinations completed at the end of Indian secondary schooling are generally reviewed subject by subject, with particular attention paid to results in subjects directly relevant to the intended course of study.
Because India has multiple recognised examination boards operating at state and national level, and because grading conventions differ between them, institutions often rely on established equivalency guidance to interpret results consistently. This means a strong result under one board's marking approach is not always read identically to a similarly labelled result from another board.
For students and families, the practical implication is that raw percentage scores do not always translate directly into an equivalent Australian entry score without some form of conversion or assessment. Engaging directly with an institution's admissions guidance, rather than relying on informal comparisons between qualifications, generally gives the clearest picture of how a particular result will be viewed.
