Families planning a return to India after years abroad often find the choice of city matters as much as the decision to return itself, since Indian cities differ considerably in climate, cost of living, infrastructure, and pace of life. A city that suited a family well a decade earlier may feel quite different on return, simply through the pace of ordinary urban change.
Larger metropolitan cities generally offer stronger job markets, more established international schooling options, and better healthcare infrastructure, but often at the cost of longer commutes, higher living costs, and denser, more congested daily life. Smaller cities and emerging urban centres can offer a gentler pace and lower costs, though sometimes with a narrower range of specialised services or schooling options.
Proximity to extended family is another major factor that often outweighs purely economic considerations, particularly for families prioritising support with childcare or care for ageing parents. Spending meaningful time in a shortlisted city before committing, rather than relying solely on memory or reputation, tends to give a much more realistic sense of whether it will suit day to day life.
