A child born outside India to Indian parents does not automatically become an Indian citizen in the way a child born on Indian soil to Indian parents traditionally has, since India does not generally grant citizenship purely by place of birth. Instead, citizenship by descent depends on specific conditions relating to the parents' own citizenship status and, in some cases, prior registration steps.
For families where one or both parents hold Indian citizenship at the time of the child's birth, registering the birth at an Indian consulate within a defined window is often a relevant step, since missing that window can affect the pathway available later. Where a parent has already taken on another country's citizenship, the child's own eligibility for Indian citizenship by descent narrows considerably.
In practice, many diaspora children end up connected to India through an OCI card instead of citizenship by descent, since it offers a simpler route once outright citizenship is not available or not pursued. Understanding which pathway applies to a specific family situation generally requires checking current consular guidance rather than relying on assumptions carried over from an earlier generation.
